I put this up against a older trendnet 802.11n AP in my bedroom.From my living room, which has throughput issues to the AP due to plaster walls, throughput went from 13 Mbps to 23 Mbps download when upgrading to the Buffalo over Speakeasy Speedtest. Sitting next to the router, its only a few Mbps difference. I've purchased probably a dozen wifi APs/routers for work and home in the last 12 years, this is the best I have used in terms of range and throughput in tricky areas. On top of that, its a nice looking unit, probably smaller than you would guess from the picture. Setup as an AP was easy - never installed any of the software or read directions, just plugged it into ethernet and connected. Also - on my 2011 MacBook Pro, this unit connects *extremely* fast. I never really thought about how long it takes to associate with an AP, but this one connects almost instantly according to the MacBook's wifi indicator... This router has the IEEE 802.11n technology, the latest technology with faster transfer rates than most wired connections. IEEE 802.11n replaces IEEE 802.11g. That's why it's ripping fast compared to prior experiences. The antennas are removable so you definitely want to get two high gain antennas if your router is close to metal such as steel file cabinets, for example. That's what I did because my router is stuck near metal filing cabinets.This router doesn't have Digital Living Network Alliance (DLNA) which uses universal plug and play (UPnP) for media management. This is worthwhile to have if the devices used for interoperability are also DLNA-certified. The N600 dual-band big brother to this N300 router has been running in my apartment for about two months now without any problems, providing internet to two computers with ethernet cables, sharing files from a hard drive connected by the USB slot, and sharing the wireless connection with an internet radio.The N300 is significantly less expensive and for these purposes and with a moderate-speed cable internet service, there is no notable difference in function. As they seem to be identical in practice, my advice is to get the N300 model unless the wireless will be accessed by multiple devices at the same time, using a lot of high-capacity bandwidth. This N300 is also ideal for using as a bridge to expand the area of wireless access. I was able to set this up myself after having help setting up the N600.
